I met her standing by the road she took my heart and wouldn't let it go
they found my head up in the clouds
then I lost her out Colorado way where the mountains stand tall
thats where she stayed I was leaving still I'm grateful for her patience
I put out my put out my put out my thumb
two guys pulled up in a tandem truck they were funny
and I was wasted
I met a soldier on the road, he killed a man in 1945
he said he looked into his eyes
he was more confidant then I've ever been
impatiently he said good by friend
I believe he thought I'd never pull my act together
I pictured him in his younger days
fighting hand to hand the sky ablaze
with a life ebbing at the end of his fingers
I caught a ride with a very strange man
who said he felt God's invisible hand
he was directed to build a city in the desert
he made me nervous the way he drove
never turning his head in a monotone he said
son you better make your way to Phoenix
I saw a young man on the road
he said that no one could be trusted
he wrapped himself in a cocoon
and I thought if that were me
with no one to set me free
would I change or would I die
would I break out would I fly
would I try soaring high
would I fly would I fly
